What is Hypoparathyroidism? click to learn more.
Hypoparathyroidism is an uncommon condition in which your body secretes inadequate abnormally low levels of parathyroid hormone. It regulates and maintain a balance of your body levels calcium and phosphorus. The low production of PTH in hypoparathyroidism leads to decreased blood levels of calcium (hypocalcemia) and increased levels of blood phosphorus (hyperphosphatemia). This is a very rare condition, and most commonly occurs because of damage to or removal of parathyroid glands at the time of parathyroid or thyroid surgery. You may also have hypoparathyroidism because you have another condition that affects how much PTH is in your body, such as a low magnesium level.
